I haven't shampooed my hair since December 22, 2012, and I feel that I've only just now reached the end of my transition/detox phase. I have fine, limp, straight hair that I used to shampoo every day.
I've abandoned the bs/acv method pretty much right away, being an ambitious sort. I wanted to make the elusive water-only method work for me. Over the past nine months I've worked my way through tea rinses, lemon rinses, egg washes, boar bristle brushes, not washing may hair at all, you name it -- all to end that dreadful detox period. To make a long story short, my hair just looked atrocious, and I cannot imagine what my colleagues must think of me. Greasy, streaky, flat -- just terrible, terrible looking hair. My head broke out with pimples; they whole thing was just awful.
I finally couldn't take it any longer, and I washed my hair with silicone-free conditioner when I passed the six month mark, approximately. Wow. Left my hair soft and clean and shiny. I was finally rid of the oily, waxy mess on my head. So that's when I used a conditioner wash once a week, paired with a water wash three days after, and now I've been able to stretch the conditioner washes to probably once every five weeks (I water wash twice a week) until the wax build up gets to be too much.
Please remember that any advice you get on this board may not be for you. *Your hair* will tell you what it needs, and no matter how long it takes, it WILL get better. I didn't believe it myself, but it. will. get. better. Also, you may as well face reality right now and adjust your expectation of what your hair can do for you. If you're in this journey to single-handedly save the environment or to stick it to the man and his evil advertising minions, you're on a good track. Keep up the good work. If you're doing this to achieve gorgeous movie star hair, forget it. Not gonna happen. Your hair is your hair.
